A Quilt for Justice

CVI_quiltIn November 2011, Dianne Joens and her daughter Darla traveled to Uganda with her Church, Lutheran Church of Hope in Des Moines, Iowa on a ChildVoice team. Dianne was moved by what ChildVoice was doing to help the girls in Uganda whose lives were torn apart by war. Dianne and her daughter wondered what she personally could do to help. As a seamstress and quilter, Dianne set about plans to use her skills to make a difference.

The ChildVoice team returned this past January, and Dianne and put her plan in action: team members took with them individual messages written on post-it notes by members of church. They then transcribed the messages onto squares of fabric hung in the church as prayer flags for viewing on the dedication day for the new Lukome Center earlier this year. Seen by an estimated 500 people present at the ceremony, these prayer flags provided a truly moving moment, marking a brighter future for these girls.

After the opening, the squares of fabric were collected by the team and brought back to the states. Dianne then sewed these squares into a beautiful, multi-colored quilt. This stunning quilt will be auctioned at the 2nd Annual Raise Your Voice event in Des Moines on September 26. The proceeds will make their way back to ChildVoice’s Lukome Center in Uganda to support the girls and their children.
