RAGBRAI ChildVoice team 2007

The 2007 ChildVoice RAGBRAI team, including Patrick, Charles, and Jackie, former child soldiers in Uganda

In two weeks, I will join ChildVoice’s largest team to ride my 6th Register’s Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa – better known in the cycling community as RAGBRAI!! This ride started by two Des Moines Register journalists in 1973 has grown over the past 41 years to become the longest, largest and oldest bicycle touring event in the world. Always held in the heat of the summer, it has proved to be a formidable challenge, yet the hospitality of small town rural Iowa makes it one of the coolest experiences I have ever participated in.

RAGBRAI and the state of Iowa embraced ChildVoice on our first ride in 2007 when we rode the ride with Patrick, Charles, and Jackie – three former child soldiers from Northern Uganda. The funds raised on that ride helped to launch the Lukome Center, our therapeutic community for war affected girls.

Since then, we have come back to RAGBRAI each year to raise money for the Lukome Center and the girls we serve. Every time, I meet new friends and reconnect with old friends, many of whom still remember our first ride with Patrick, Charles, and Jackie.

RAGBRAI ChildVoice 2012

The 2012 ChildVoice RAGBRAI team

This year, I am taking on the largest fundraising goal for the RAGBRAI ride. I have accepted the challenge of matching our team’s fundraising goal of $20,000. So between now and when I dip my wheel in the Mississippi River on July 27th, I would ask you to help me reach my personal goal of $20,000. Your donation can be made here. I have appreciated your support in the past, but I really need it now to make my $20,000 target. Thanks for your support.
