ChildVoice Beads are handmade by women who work at the Lukome Center in northern Uganda. Each of these beautiful, one-of-a-kind necklaces, bracelets and earrings are made with mostly recycled paper that is carefully cut into long strips, rolled around a needle and secured with glue. Four coats of environmentally friendly varnish are applied and dried, and then the beads are strung together to create these beautiful necklaces, bracelets, and earrings.
The child mothers who come to the Lukome Center have survived the trauma of being kidnapped by rebel armies, forced to be child soldiers and sex slaves, and suffered tremendous brutality. At the Lukome Center, these child mothers find safety and receive counseling, nutrition, education, and medical care for themselves and their children.
The ChildVoice Beads project is part of a long-term investment in the empowerment and economic resiliency of women and children for the first time since the rebel war began in Uganda more than 20 years ago. Additionally, net proceeds from the paper bead sales offset operating expenses of the ChildVoice Lukome Center.
